What is GRAND?

This project is focused on developing Guidelines for Reporting About Network Data (GRAND). The guidelines are intended to be:

  • General – Applicable to networks studied from an SNA (Social Network Analysis) or NetSci (Network Science) orientation

  • Agnostic – Independent of the content of the network

  • Flexible – Applicable to any type of network (e.g., complete, ego, dynamic, etc.)

  • Limited – Restricted to the minimum information that should always be reported when describing or analyzing a network

How is GRAND being developed?

The guidelines are being developed in three phases:

  • Scoping Survey (2023) – Members of network association boards, journal editorial boards, and the wider network research community participated in an online survey about network data reporting practices (N = 306). The anonymized data is available here.

  • Working Group (2024-2026) – An interdisciplinary working group of 15 network researchers is developing a preliminary draft of the guidelines. The working group is:

Zachary Neal (Michigan State University)                        Kathleen Carley (Carnegie Mellon University)

Noshir Contractor (Northwestern University)                       Manlio De Domenico (University of Padua)

James Hollway (Geneva Graduate Institute)                        Joe Labianca (University of Massachusetts – Amherst)

Nicholas Landry (University of Virginia)                                 David Lazar (Northeastern University)

Miranda Lubbers (Autonomous University of Barcelona)    Jenna Watling Neal (Michigan State University)

Francisca Ortiz (Universidad Mayor)                                      Tiago Peixoto (Interdisciplinary Transformation University)

Bernice Pescosolido (Indiana University)                               Christina Prell (University of Groningen)

Andrea Sofia Teixeira (Northeastern University London)

  • GRAND Consortium (2025-ongoing) – The guidelines will be refined based on feedback from the wider network research community. To join the "GRAND Consortium" and participate in the development of these guidelines, please complete this form.

GRAND is related to, but independent from, another project to develop Recommendations for Sharing Network Data and Materials. You can learn more about those guidelines here.
